Ashfaqulla Khan

Khan was born on October 22, 1900, in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up at a time when Mahatma Gandhi had launched the non-cooperation movement and urged Indians not to pay taxes to the government or co-operate with the British.

Within about 1.5 years of the movement’s launch, in February 1922, the Chauri Chaura incident took place in Gorakhpur — a large number of non-cooperation protestors clashed with the police and set the police station on fire, killing roughly 22 policemen. Opposed to violence, Gandhi called off the movement.

Begum Hazrat Mahal

Begum Hazrat Mahal, the warrior queen of Awadh who one of the few women to challenge the British during the revolt of 1857.

Born as Muhammadi Khanum, she got married to Nawab Wajid Ali of Awadh. She got the title of ‘Hazrat Mahal’ after the birth of their son, Birjis Kader.

India’s first war of independence began in 1857 and Begum Hazrat Mahal became a key figure in organizing the uprising against the British in Awadh region. Her military and administrative ability came to fore during those testing times. It is said that in no time the rebellion spread to all parts of the Awadh… it turned into a people’s uprising.

Bakht Khan

Bakht Khan, (born c. 1797—died 1859), commander in chief of rebel forces in the early stages of the anti-British Indian Mutiny (1857–58).

Haider Ali

Haidar Ali (1721-1782) was the Indian ruler of Mysore. He was the first freedom fighter of India. He was the most formidable enemy of the British in their struggle for supremacy in South India.

Maulana Azad

One of the greatest freedom fighters of India, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, is our first name of Muslim Freedom Fighters. His service to the nation didn’t just stop after India became independent, he continued serving India till his last breath. He first took part in India’s Independence aged just 16. In his second stint as Congress President, He started the Quit India Movement. He was the first education minister of India. He was conferred a Bharat Ratna in the year 1922. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, after serving the country for over 50 years, breathed his last on 22 February 1958.
